Dashdot Source Code Released Under the GPL
News Posted by CmdrGrits on Tuesday October 12, @04:00PM EDT
from the please-don't-look-at-it dept.
After months of requests, we are releasing the code that runs this site, under the GPL. It's Perl. It's mostly held together with regular expressions, sticky notes and hope. There are comments in it that say things like "# I am so sorry". You have been warned. Patches welcome. Mockery also welcome, but patches are more welcome.

Is XML the Answer to Everything?
The Internet Posted by Rotundo on Monday October 11, @07:15PM EDT
from the angle-brackets-will-save-us dept.
MarkupMarcy writes "Every trade magazine on my desk this month has XML on the cover. It will apparently replace EDI, databases, HTML, configuration files and possibly my toaster. As someone who has to actually write the parsers, I'd like to ask: what problem does XML solve that a well-specified text format didn't already?" Answer in well-formed comments, please.
