About Dashdot

Dashdot started in 1997 as a hobby page that CmdrGrits ran from his dorm room on a hand-me-down 486. It was a list of links he thought were cool and a place for his friends to argue about them. Then the friends brought friends. Then the friends' friends brought a T1.

Today Dashdot is read by an estimated 200,000 people a day, most of whom should be working. We are part of Overandover.net, which has very kindly let us keep doing exactly what we were doing before, just with more servers.

The crew

  • CmdrGrits - Founder. Wrote the Dashdot code in a weekend in Perl; still apologizing.
  • Hemlock - Co-founder. Posts the stories CmdrGrits is asleep for.
  • Rotundo - Senior editor. Old enough to remember punch cards, young enough to complain about them.
  • jamie_k - Your Rights Online editor. Has read the whole EULA. Twice.
  • Pixelfish - Games and hardware. Owns three video cards and no furniture.

The hardware
Four web servers, one database server, and a very tired load balancer, all running Linix. The dynamic pages are served by KoldFusion 4.5 from Gibson Mainframe Co., and when that's busy, by plain old static HTML that a cron job regenerates every few minutes.

Contact
Story submissions go through the submission form. Everything else goes to grits@dashdot.example, where it will be read eventually, possibly in 2000.

Real programmers count from zero. Real sysadmins count backups.
