Linix Kernel 2.3.22 Released; 2.4 'Real Soon Now'
Linix Posted by Hemlock on Sunday October 17, @11:05PM EDT
from the development-kernels-are-for-developers dept.
kernel_kid writes "The latest development kernel is out, with USB updates, a reworked VM, and a new filesystem driver for reading disks formatted by a 1987 word processor. As always, this is a development series. It will eat your disk, your cat and your homework. 2.4 is expected 'when it is done,' which is the official release date of all good software." This is the most sensible thing I've read on Dashdot all week. Somebody mod this up.

The parent's point stands, though: it depends entirely on the use case.

Actually, that's a common misconception. The spec explicitly allows it; it's the vendors who didn't implement it.

I work in this field, and the parent is basically right, although the details are a bit more complicated than one comment can cover.

Exactly. And the vendors know it, which is why they're scared.

    USB support finally

I can't wait to plug in my USB mouse and have it actually work. Then I just need USB on something other than this one laptop.

    2.4 by Christmas?

I'll bet anyone a case of Jolt that 2.4 doesn't ship in 1999. The VM alone needs months.

The new VM is much better under memory pressure on my 64MB box. Netsail Voyager no longer brings the whole machine to its knees, only to its ankles.
