Dashdot Source Code Released Under the GPL
News Posted by CmdrGrits on Tuesday October 12, @04:00PM EDT
from the please-don't-look-at-it dept.
After months of requests, we are releasing the code that runs this site, under the GPL. It's Perl. It's mostly held together with regular expressions, sticky notes and hope. There are comments in it that say things like "# I am so sorry". You have been warned. Patches welcome. Mockery also welcome, but patches are more welcome.

The release is called "Dash 0.3" and includes the comment engine, the moderation system and the infamous poll booth. It does not include the cron job that crashes every Tuesday, because frankly we don't know which one that is.

This is the most sensible thing I've read on Dashdot all week. Somebody mod this up.

Thanks for posting this. I learned something today, which is rare for a comment section.

I tried that and it set my monitor on fire. Thanks a lot.

I've wanted to run a Dashdot-style site for my LUG for ages. Thank you!

    I looked at it. I need a drink. There's a 900-line function called 'displayStory'. I'm not kidding.

Exactly. And the vendors know it, which is why they're scared.

You're both wrong, and I'm going to explain why in a post that's way too long for anyone to read. Paragraph one: ...

Not true at all. I've been running it for months with no problems. Maybe check your hardware?

I work in this field, and the parent is basically right, although the details are a bit more complicated than one comment can cover.

    Interesting, but...

This is interesting, but I think the article misses the bigger picture. Technology like this only matters when it gets cheap enough for ordinary people. Until then it's a toy for people who read Dashdot. Which, admittedly, is us.

    Portals sucks

This is why Portals sucks. I've been saying it for years. Install Linix. Problem solved.

    Regex heaven
by Anonymous Coward on Tuesday October 12, @06:58PM EDT (#23)
There is a regular expression in the comment filter that is 340 characters long. I've printed it out and framed it.
