Petz.com IPO Soars Despite Losing Money on Every Sale
Money Posted by CmdrGrits on Saturday October 16, @01:00PM EDT
from the we'll-make-it-up-in-volume dept.
DayTraderDan writes "Online pet store Petz.com, whose sock puppet mascot has become oddly famous, went public today and closed up 85%. According to the S-1, the company sells 40-pound bags of dog food for less than the cost of shipping them. When asked about the business model, a spokesperson said: 'Eyeballs.'" I'm not saying it's a bubble. I'm saying I just saw a sock puppet with a market cap larger than my town.

    The bubble
by Anonymous Coward on Saturday October 16, @02:30PM EDT (#10)
When a company that ships heavy, cheap, low-margin goods over long distances is valued at a billion dollars, the market has stopped looking at fundamentals. This will end badly.

Actually, that's a common misconception. The spec explicitly allows it; it's the vendors who didn't implement it.

Exactly. And the vendors know it, which is why they're scared.
