GRANITE CITY, New Hampshire (CNM) -- Sen. Harlan Whitcomb, the front-runner in most polls, came under sustained attack Sunday night from his three rivals, who accused him of "coasting" on name recognition and a campaign war chest of more than $60 million.

"Senator Whitcomb has spent more money than some countries," said Gov. Della Price-Morrow. Whitcomb replied that he had "never spent a dime I didn't raise honestly, and I've raised a lot of dimes."
The candidates also traded claims about their roles in the growth of the Internet. Rep. Otis Fenwick said he had "voted for every single bill containing the word 'information.'" Businessman Rex Ambergast said he had sent "nearly 400 e-mails, personally."
An informal poll of the audience found the debate's clear winner was the moderator, who managed to keep all four candidates to their time limits by means of a small brass bell.
The first primary is scheduled for February 1. Whitcomb's campaign said it would spend the holidays "listening to voters," while Price-Morrow announced a 99-town bus tour beginning December 27.
