Ambergast launches campaign with 30-minute infomercial

DRY SPOON, Arizona (CNM) -- Businessman Rex Ambergast, whose company makes pressure cookers sold on late-night television, took his presidential campaign to the airwaves Friday with a 30-minute program that blended policy proposals with the persuasive rhythms of a product demonstration.

"But wait, there's more," Ambergast said, unveiling a chart on the federal deficit. Later he displayed a flowchart of his tax plan and, for reasons the campaign did not explain, a set of steak knives.

Political analysts were unsure what to make of the broadcast. "It was either the strangest political ad of the decade or the most effective," said one. "Possibly both."

The campaign said a toll-free number displayed during the program received 41,000 calls. About half were from people who wanted to buy the knives.
