Rabbit Chews Through Phone Cords
Ask the Vet with Dr. Bea Woofington, DVM
Q: My rabbit Hopscotch chewed through the phone cord three times this month. I keep getting knocked offline. Is she trying to tell me something? — Grace W., Burlington, Vermont |
A: She is telling you that rabbits must chew. Their teeth grow throughout their lives, and cords happen to be the perfect size and texture. Unfortunately, chewing a live electrical cord can be fatal, so this needs fixing right away.
Run cords through hard plastic tubing or split-loom covers, or move them out of reach entirely. Then give Hopscotch better things to chew: unlimited timothy hay, apple-wood sticks and untreated cardboard boxes. Supervise her when she's out of her pen. Your modem will thank you, and so will she.
