Why Does My Ferret Steal Socks?
Ask the Vet with Dr. Bea Woofington, DVM

Q: My ferret Ziggy steals socks, keys and the TV remote and hides them under the couch. Is something wrong with him?
— Rhonda M., Bakersfield, California

A: Nothing is wrong with Ziggy. He is a ferret. 'Stashing' is completely normal ferret behavior; in the wild their relatives cache food in burrows, and pet ferrets apply the same instinct to anything they can carry.

Check his stash regularly, especially for rubber, foam or anything small enough to swallow, because intestinal blockages are a real danger for ferrets. Give him a legal stash spot with a fleece blanket and some safe toys, and ferret-proof your house the way you would for a toddler. As for the socks, I recommend a laundry basket with a lid. Our mascot recommends it too, but for personal reasons.
