Puppy Love, Online
It used to be that a dog met other dogs the old-fashioned way: at the park, nose first. But this is 1999, and the information superhighway has an off-ramp for everybody. This spring a handful of new web sites began offering personal ads for pets, complete with scanned photos, favorite chew toys and a little box to check if you are 'looking for a playmate' or 'just looking.'

We talked to Marge Pumpernickel of Spokane, Washington, whose pug Doodle has been 'online' since March. "He's had three dates," she told us. "One of them was a cat. The photo was blurry. We think the cat's owner did it on purpose."

Our advice? Meet in a public place, like a park or a pet store. Bring a leash. Let your dog sniff first and ask questions later. And never, ever give out your dog's home address in a chat room. That is how Doodle ended up with a pen pal who is a goat.

Petz Picks for the First Date: a fresh Dot-Com Teal sweater, a Y2K-compliant ball to break the ice, and a 26-foot leash in case things go really well.
