Dog Barks at Delivery Trucks
Ask the Vet with Dr. Bea Woofington, DVM
Q: Ever since I started ordering from Petz.com, my sheltie Rosie barks at every delivery truck. Is it something you are shipping? — Sam B., Overland Park, Kansas |
A: It's not the kibble, I promise. Shelties are herding dogs, and big, loud vehicles that pull up, drop something off and leave are, from Rosie's point of view, intruders she personally chased away. Every time the truck drives off, her barking 'worked,' so she does it again.
Start by rewarding calm behavior when she hears a truck in the distance, before she's revved up. Keep treats near the front window. A tired herding dog is a quiet herding dog, so make sure she gets plenty of exercise and puzzle toys. And please give our driver a wave. He's been through a lot.
