Hamster Runs All Night
Ask the Vet with Dr. Bea Woofington, DVM

Q: My hamster Pickles runs on his wheel from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. and it squeaks. I haven't slept since March. Help!
— Kendra L., Portland, Oregon

A: Hamsters are nocturnal and very active, and a hamster can easily run several miles a night. Taking away the wheel is not the answer; it's his gym, his office and his hobby all in one.

Instead, get a solid-surface 'silent' wheel that is large enough that his back stays straight while he runs; wire-rung wheels can injure little feet. A drop of vegetable oil on a squeaky axle (not where he can lick it) or a quick swap usually fixes the noise. And if all else fails, move the cage to a room that isn't your bedroom. Pickles won't mind. Pickles is busy.
