Cat Won't Use the Litter Box
Ask the Vet with Dr. Bea Woofington, DVM

Q: My cat Mr. Fluffington has started going outside the litter box. I switched to a new brand of litter last month. Is that it?
— Arthur G., Cedar Rapids, Iowa

A: It might be. Cats have strong opinions about texture and scent, and a sudden switch can be enough to send them elsewhere. Try mixing the old litter with the new and changing over gradually across a week or two.

But please also call your veterinarian. A change in litter box habits can be the first sign of a urinary tract problem, which is painful and, in male cats especially, can become an emergency quickly. Keep the box very clean, in a quiet spot, and have one more box than you have cats.
