How Long Do Box Turtles Live?
Ask the Vet with Dr. Bea Woofington, DVM

Q: My grandson wants a box turtle. How long will it live?
— Edna F., Bowling Green, Kentucky

A: With good care, a box turtle can live 40 years or more. Some have lived over a century. That is longer than most companies on the stock exchange, and certainly longer than some I could name.

Before you buy, think about who will care for the turtle when your grandson goes to college. Box turtles need a large enclosure, a UVB light, a varied diet of insects, worms, vegetables and some fruit, and a shallow water dish. Never take one from the wild; buy from a reputable breeder or adopt from a reptile rescue.
