Can My Dog Eat the Packing Peanuts?
Ask the Vet with Dr. Bea Woofington, DVM

Q: Your boxes are full of foam packing peanuts. My lab Duke keeps trying to eat them. Is that safe?
— Ray H., Baton Rouge, Louisiana

A: No. Foam peanuts can cause choking or an intestinal blockage, especially in a dog who swallows first and asks questions later, which describes most labs. The newer 'dissolvable' starch peanuts are less dangerous but still not food.

Open boxes where Duke can't help, and bag up the peanuts right away. If he does swallow a large amount, or starts vomiting, acting lethargic or straining, call your veterinarian. We've asked our warehouse to use fewer peanuts. They said they'd need more funding.
