LAKE WENDELL, Minnesota (CNM) -- Members of the Lake Wendell Curling Club will gather on the frozen lake at 11:55 p.m. on December 31 and, as the clock strikes midnight, slide a 42-pound granite stone toward the target.

"We will have the first sporting event of the new millennium," said skip Gunnar Halvorsen. "Unless someone in the Marisol Islands is doing something, in which case we will have the first one in Minnesota."
The club has invited spectators, though it warned that the event could last as little as 12 seconds. A hot-dish supper will follow.
Halvorsen said the club had considered the possibility of Y2K problems. "The ice does not use computers," he said. "The scoreboard is a chalkboard. We are ready."
