SAINT ULRIC, Louisiana (CNM) -- Odette Fontenot has heard every fruitcake joke. That there is only one fruitcake in the world, passed from family to family. That it is useful as a doorstop. That it will survive Y2K, nuclear war and the sun's eventual expansion.

"Those people have not had a good fruitcake," said Fontenot, 64, whose bakery ships 30,000 of them each December. "A good fruitcake is moist, it has pecans, and it has been soaked in a quantity of rum that I am not permitted to disclose."
Her bakery began taking orders on the Internet this year and sales have doubled. The most popular item is a "Millennium Fruitcake" decorated with the numerals 2000 in candied cherries.
Fontenot insists her cakes are eaten, not regifted. "Well," she said, "maybe one or two. But they are regifted with love."
