SAN ESTEVAN, California (CNM) -- CartRocket.com, which delivers groceries ordered online in five cities, says it has added 40,000 customers since September. Its orange vans have become a familiar sight in suburban neighborhoods.

But the company says it will not deliver on December 31 or January 1. "Our systems are ready," said chief executive Nadia Petrakis. "We just think our drivers deserve to be home. And we are not completely sure about the traffic lights."
Customers are being encouraged to place their holiday orders early. Some are ordering a great deal. "One customer ordered 400 rolls of paper towels," Petrakis said. "We asked if it was a mistake. He said no, it was a strategy."
Industry analysts say online grocers lose money on most orders, though they expect that to change "once everybody is online, which will be any day now."
