Will My Goldfish Survive Y2K?
Ask the Vet with Dr. Bea Woofington, DVM

Q: My son is worried his goldfish, Captain, will stop working on January 1, 2000. What should I tell him?
— Phil R., Duluth, Minnesota

A: You can tell him that Captain is completely Y2K compliant. Fish do not have calendars, clocks or computer chips. The only thing Captain cares about is clean water, the right temperature and not too much food.

If your son wants a project, have him help you do a partial water change once a week and test the water with a simple kit. A well-kept goldfish can live ten years or more, which means Captain may very well see the year 2010. Your computer may not.
