Lower Bruskia bakes record-breaking millennium cake

BRUSKHOLM, Lower Bruskia (CNM) -- More than 600 volunteers worked through the night Wednesday to assemble a sponge cake stretching from the royal palace to the railway station, a distance officials measured at 3.1 miles.

The cake used 41 tons of flour, 220,000 eggs and what the head baker called "an amount of cream that we will not discuss." It was decorated with the numerals 2000 repeated every ten yards.

Prince Augustin III cut the first slice at noon and declared the cake "a monument to the Bruskian spirit and the Bruskian hen." Slices were distributed free to anyone who could reach the cake, which by mid-afternoon included a number of pigeons.

The celebration was briefly overshadowed by a statement from Upper Bruskia, whose 1998 cake was shorter but considerably taller. "Ours had nine layers," said a spokesman. "Theirs is a very long biscuit."
