NUKU'ALA, Tavai (CNM) -- The Kingdom of Tavai on Wednesday became one of the first nations to declare itself fully Y2K compliant, after its Ministry of Information unplugged the country's sole government mainframe and wheeled it into the national museum.

"We had one computer. It was for the payroll. Now the payroll is done by Mrs. Fifita, who has a very good pencil," said Information Minister Sione Halaholo.
International Y2K monitors said the approach, while unusual, was "technically valid." A team from the Geneva-based Global Millennium Readiness Council visited the museum and confirmed that the computer was, indeed, off.
Tavai still faces a challenge from the neighboring Marisol Islands over which nation will see the first sunrise of 2000. Tavai officials said they were "considering all options, including getting up earlier."
