PORT HALLOWAY, Maine (CNM) -- Snow fell at up to three inches an hour Monday as a nor'easter churned past Cape Kettle, bringing wind gusts of 55 mph and drifts tall enough to swallow parked cars.

The Port Halloway public works department deployed all nine plows and, by mid-afternoon, a borrowed tractor. Schools closed for the day, and the town's ferry to Gull Island was canceled.
The CyberLobster, Port Halloway's only Internet cafe, also closed early. "The phone line was making a sound like a seagull," said owner Brenda Coffin. "Even for a 28.8 modem, that is not normal."
Forecasters said the storm would move into the Maritimes by Tuesday, leaving behind clear skies and a bitter cold, with lows near 5 degrees. A second, weaker system could bring flurries by the weekend.
