DRY SPOON, Arizona (CNM) -- The thermometer outside the Dry Spoon post office read 81 degrees at 3 p.m. Wednesday, breaking a record for the date set in 1958 and prompting the town's Christmas parade to switch from hot cocoa to lemonade.

The warmth stretched across much of the Southwest, with record highs in a dozen communities. Forecasters credited a ridge of high pressure parked over the region.
"It does not feel like Christmas, but it does feel like a good day for golf," said Mayor Lupe Carrasco, who was photographed lighting the town tree in a short-sleeved shirt.
Cooler air is expected by the weekend, with highs returning to the mid-60s. Local stores reported a run on sunscreen and, for reasons no one could explain, snow globes.
