MOSSBANK, Oregon (CNM) -- Call it the bunker look. Outdoor-gear retailers report record sales of multi-pocketed cargo pants, heavy-duty parkas and fleece -- not only to campers but to urban shoppers dressing for whatever January brings.

One Mossbank boutique is selling a $340 "Millennium Tote" that contains a flashlight, water filter, emergency blanket and lipstick. "You have to look your best, even after the collapse of civilization," said owner Kirsten Haugland.
Fashion critics are divided on whether the trend will last into 2000. "If nothing happens on January 1, a lot of people will have a lot of very practical pants," said one.
Haugland is unworried. "Pockets," she said, "are never out of style."
