Before the Web there were bulletin board systems. You dialed a phone number, your modem screamed, and if nobody else was on, you got in. I ran The Electric Basement out of my parents' basement for nine years on two phone lines. This page remembers it.

Why I Shut It Down
Everybody went to the Web. The last month I had three callers, and two of them were me testing the line. I unplugged the modem on New Year's Eve 1996 and had a little cry. Then I built this page.
