Overclocking Diary

10 Aug 1997Bumped the front side bus to 100MHz. Booted! Ran Gibfest Arena for an hour, no crashes.
19 Nov 1997Tried 112MHz. Blue screen. Smelled something. Backed off.
16 Jan 1998Added a second fan with a hacked-up molex adapter. Temps down 6 degrees.
26 Feb 1998Reinstalled Panes for the fourth time this month. I could do it in my sleep.
18 Mar 1998Got the LAN working with my brother's computer. Two hours of frag time before Mom said dinner.
27 May 1998Flashed the BIOS. Held my breath the whole time. Success!

Tips

  • Always write down your old jumper settings first.
  • Thermal paste: a dab, not a glob.
  • Ground yourself before touching anything. Trust me on this one.
  • Defrag weekly. It is relaxing to watch the little blocks.
  • Do not overclock the computer you need for your term paper.
