NEW BRAMFORD, Connecticut (CNM) -- About 300 people gathered on the town green Saturday as the New Bramford Millennium Committee lowered a stainless-steel time capsule into a concrete vault, to be opened on January 1, 2100.

The capsule holds 412 letters from schoolchildren, a copy of the local newspaper, a pager, a cassette of the high school band and a plush purple bear whose tag the committee carefully protected "for collectors of the future."
It also contains a floppy disk with the town's 1999 budget. Committee chairman Gordon Pell acknowledged that "there is some doubt" that anyone in 2100 will have a machine to read it. "Then again," he said, "there is some doubt that anyone today can read the budget."
The committee decided against including a VCR, after a lengthy debate about whether anyone in 2100 would know how to set its clock.
