Town splits on whether to celebrate millennium this year or next

MOSSBANK, Oregon (CNM) -- The Mossbank Historical Society is adamant: there was no year zero, so the third millennium begins on January 1, 2001. The Mossbank Chamber of Commerce is equally adamant: "Nobody wants to party for 2001."

The disagreement has split the town of 6,400 into two camps. The Chamber is throwing a fireworks show and street dance on December 31, 1999. The Historical Society has booked the Grange hall for December 31, 2000, and is selling tickets now.

"We are not against fun," said society president Agnes Kettleby. "We are against arithmetic errors."

Some residents have resolved the dispute by planning to attend both. "Two parties, two hangovers, one millennium," said local barber Ray Ochoa. "That's a good deal any way you count it."
