Banks stock ATMs with extra cash as customers hedge Y2K bets

HALCYON SPRINGS, Florida (CNM) -- Armored trucks have been making extra stops at cash machines around Halcyon Springs this month, as banks prepare for customers who want a little cash on hand when the calendar turns.

"Most people are taking out an extra $50 or $100, just in case," said First Coastal Bank branch manager Luis Andrade. "One gentleman asked if he could withdraw his safe-deposit box. We explained that it does not work that way."

Federal officials have printed tens of billions of dollars in additional currency as a precaution. They stress that bank computers have been tested and that deposits are insured.

Andrade said his branch had received only one unusual request: a customer who wanted all his money "in quarters, for the vending machines after civilization falls."
