Prepared Not Scared: Y2K

When the clocks strike midnight on January 1, 2000, every computer that stores the year as two digits will think it is 1900. Banks. Power plants. Water. Elevators. The microwave. I am not panicking. I am PREPARING. You should too.

Y2K Checklist

Water: 1 gallon per person per day. Get 90 days worth.
Cash. Small bills. ATMs may not work.
Kerosene heater and lamps
Batteries, batteries, batteries
First aid kit and 3 months of prescriptions
A hand-crank radio
Board games (it will be a long winter)

The Stockpile

My Prediction

Nobody knows, and that is the point. The best case: a few glitches, a lot of jokes, and I eat canned peaches until June. The worst case: power out for weeks in January. Which would you rather be ready for?

I work in IT at a bank (I will not say which). I have seen the code. Some of it was written in 1971 by people who are now retired to Florida. We are fixing it as fast as we can. Draw your own conclusions.
