Small Museum Web Server Survives Being Linked From Here

WebWeaver writes "Remember last week's story about the Museum of Obsolete Calculators? Their webmaster wrote in to say the site took 140,000 hits in 24 hours, on a 486/66 with 16MB of RAM and a single ISDN line, and it stayed up. Her secret: static HTML, no CGI, and a strongly worded note taped to the server that said 'DO NOT TURN OFF.'" We salute you, 486/66. You are braver than most corporate web farms.

    Static HTML wins

This is the lesson every web developer should learn. Static files are fast. You don't need an application server to serve a picture of a slide rule.

The note is the most important part of the infrastructure. Our whole data center runs on notes like that.

This is the most sensible thing I've read on Dashdot all week. Somebody mod this up.

The parent's point stands, though: it depends entirely on the use case.

Exactly. And the vendors know it, which is why they're scared.

Thanks for posting this. I learned something today, which is rare for a comment section.

Not true at all. I've been running it for months with no problems. Maybe check your hardware?

My microwave has more processing power than the computer that went to the moon, and it still can't figure out popcorn.

Here's a mirror in case it goes down this time: just kidding, it won't. It's a 486. It fears nothing.
