Quack III Arena Demo Hits the Net
Games Posted by Pixelfish on Thursday October 14, @10:00AM EDT
from the frag-before-you-buy dept.
RailgunRhonda writes "ego Software has released a playable demo of Quack III Arena, with four maps, bots, and a Linix version on day one. Download mirrors are melting worldwide. The demo requires a 3D card; the readme suggests that if you are trying to run it on a software renderer you should 'consider a hobby, perhaps knitting.'" Productivity across the industry has just dropped 40%. Mine certainly has.

    Linix version on day one!
by Anonymous Coward on Thursday October 14, @10:09AM EDT (#2)
This is huge. A major game shipping a native Linix demo on the same day as Portals. Thank you, ego. This is the kind of thing that actually moves people over.

I think you're missing the point. Nobody is arguing it's perfect, just that it's better than what we had.

Unlikely Tournament has better bots and more game modes. Quack III has better netcode. Flame on.

You're both wrong, and I'm going to explain why in a post that's way too long for anyone to read. Paragraph one: ...

I work in this field, and the parent is basically right, although the details are a bit more complicated than one comment can cover.

In the real world, nobody cares about this stuff. They care whether their e-mail works.

I tried it on my software renderer. I've taken up knitting. It runs at about the same frame rate.

For anyone who wants to read more, the original announcement is on their site and there's a good technical write-up in the newsgroups. Search for it, the link is too long to paste.

    Voodoo3 3000 on a Celeron 450: 58 fps in timedemo at 800x600. RazorForce 256 gets 71. Don't bother with the TNT1.

To err is human. To really foul things up requires a cron job.
