Monolith Software: Open Source Is 'Intellectual Pac-Man'
Monolith Posted by CmdrGrits on Wednesday October 13, @09:15AM EDT
from the waka-waka-waka dept.
Gnuisance writes "A leaked internal memo from Monolith Software, makers of Portals 98, says that open source software 'poses a direct, short-term revenue and platform threat' and that the company should consider 'de-commoditizing protocols.' The memo was titled 'Halloween Treat' and was apparently not meant to be read by anyone with a modem." De-commoditizing protocols. I'm going to need someone to translate that into English. Actually, no, I'm not.

    They take it seriously

You're both wrong, and I'm going to explain why in a post that's way too long for anyone to read. Paragraph one: ...

Actually, that's a common misconception. The spec explicitly allows it; it's the vendors who didn't implement it.

The parent's point stands, though: it depends entirely on the use case.

    Embrace, extend...

De-commoditize protocols = add proprietary extensions so that their stuff only works with their stuff. We've seen this movie.

For anyone who wants to read more, the original announcement is on their site and there's a good technical write-up in the newsgroups. Search for it, the link is too long to paste.

No, that's not how any of this works. Please read the FAQ before posting.

I think you're missing the point. Nobody is arguing it's perfect, just that it's better than what we had.

This is the most sensible thing I've read on Dashdot all week. Somebody mod this up.

    The real problem

The real problem here is management. Engineers know how to build things right; management sets a deadline that makes it impossible, and then acts surprised when it ships broken. Every single time.
