Leonid Meteor Storm Could Threaten Satellites
Space Posted by Hemlock on Tuesday October 12, @01:25PM EDT
from the duck-and-cover dept.
StargazerSue writes "Astronomers predict that next month's Leonid meteor shower could become a full storm, with thousands of meteors per hour. Satellite operators are planning to turn their solar panels edge-on to the stream and hope for the best. Ground observers just need dark skies, a lawn chair and something hot to drink." I'll be the one in the lawn chair. Wake me if the satellites fall.

Get away from city lights, face east after midnight, and give your eyes 20 minutes to adapt. Don't bother with binoculars, you want the widest field of view possible.

The parent's point stands, though: it depends entirely on the use case.

I think you're missing the point. Nobody is arguing it's perfect, just that it's better than what we had.

    Space junk

Each grain of sand at 70 km/s carries more energy than a bullet. It's not the big ones you worry about, it's the plasma they make when they hit.

    Standards

This is why we need open standards. Without them every vendor builds a little walled garden and the users pay for the walls.

Thanks for posting this. I learned something today, which is rare for a comment section.

I tried that and it set my monitor on fire. Thanks a lot.

Information wants to be free. Hardware wants to be cheap. I want a nap.

I've been working in this industry for 15 years, and I can tell you that this kind of thing comes around every five years with a new name. The underlying ideas don't change much; the marketing does.
