Researchers Grow Cloned Llama Named 'Tina'
Science Posted by Hemlock on Thursday October 14, @01:20PM EDT
from the hello-llama dept.
BioBob writes "A research lab in a small Scottish-sounding town that is actually in Oregon has announced the birth of Tina, the first cloned llama. Tina is reportedly healthy, curious, and has already spat at two members of the press." Clearly the ethical implications of cloning will be with us for decades. Also, llamas are great.

    Why llamas?

Llama antibodies are unusually small and simple, which makes them interesting for medical research. This isn't just a stunt.

The hype-to-substance ratio on this one is pretty high. Let's see it running in production before we all get excited.

I work in this field, and the parent is basically right, although the details are a bit more complicated than one comment can cover.

I've been working in this industry for 15 years, and I can tell you that this kind of thing comes around every five years with a new name. The underlying ideas don't change much; the marketing does.

Funny, I had the exact opposite experience. Ymmv, I guess.

    Interesting, but...

This is interesting, but I think the article misses the bigger picture. Technology like this only matters when it gets cheap enough for ordinary people. Until then it's a toy for people who read Dashdot. Which, admittedly, is us.

The parent's point stands, though: it depends entirely on the use case.

Why is this news for nerds? This is news for people who like being angry at things.

Not true at all. I've been running it for months with no problems. Maybe check your hardware?

Information wants to be free. Hardware wants to be cheap. I want a nap.
