Solar Microsystems Releases Jolt 2 Platform
News Posted by Hemlock on Saturday October 16, @07:45AM EDT
from the write-once-debug-everywhere dept.
CoffeeCoder writes "Solar has released the Jolt 2 SDK, with a new graphics toolkit, a faster virtual machine and a 20MB download. The new HotStove compiler promises speeds 'approaching C' on long-running server code, as long as you don't mind waiting for it to warm up, which takes about as long as a pot of coffee." Applets are dead, long live servlets.

Not true at all. I've been running it for months with no problems. Maybe check your hardware?

    Servers

Jolt on the server is where it's actually going. Nobody wants applets. Everybody wants a garbage-collected language for their middleware.

    20MB

A 20MB download on a 56k modem is about an hour, if nobody picks up the phone.

Actually, that's a common misconception. The spec explicitly allows it; it's the vendors who didn't implement it.

I work in this field, and the parent is basically right, although the details are a bit more complicated than one comment can cover.

    Standards
by Anonymous Coward on Saturday October 16, @10:12AM EDT (#17)
This is why we need open standards. Without them every vendor builds a little walled garden and the users pay for the walls.

    The real problem
    by perl_monger_mo on Saturday October 16, @11:15AM EDT (#23)
    (User Info)
The real problem here is management. Engineers know how to build things right; management sets a deadline that makes it impossible, and then acts surprised when it ships broken. Every single time.

I think you're missing the point. Nobody is arguing it's perfect, just that it's better than what we had.

Small correction to the story: it's not the first time this has been done. A university group demonstrated something very similar in 1996. The difference is that this one actually ships.
