IPv6 Test Network Hits 400 Sites
The Internet Posted by Rotundo on Tuesday October 12, @07:10PM EDT
from the enough-addresses-for-every-grain-of-sand dept.
HexHead writes "The experimental IPv6 backbone now connects more than 400 sites across 40 countries. With 128-bit addresses there will be enough to give an IP address to every grain of sand on every beach, which should help with the impending sand-networking boom." Adoption is expected any day now, give or take a decade.

    NAT will kill it

Everybody's going to put their houses behind NAT boxes and nobody will feel the pain of address shortage. IPv6 will take 20 years.

Actually, that's a common misconception. The spec explicitly allows it; it's the vendors who didn't implement it.

    Memorizing addresses

I can't memorize a 32-bit address half the time. Good luck memorizing fe80:0000:0000:0000... oh I give up.

Another day, another story about a chip that is 8% faster. Wake me when they invent the flying car. Or at least the flying modem.

Did anyone actually read the article? Half the comments here are answering questions that are answered in the second paragraph.

I think you're missing the point. Nobody is arguing it's perfect, just that it's better than what we had.

This is the most sensible thing I've read on Dashdot all week. Somebody mod this up.

Offtopic, but does anyone know how to get a Sound Blaster 16 working under the new kernel? It just beeps at me. Rhythmically.

The hype-to-substance ratio on this one is pretty high. Let's see it running in production before we all get excited.

    My experience
by Anonymous Coward on Tuesday October 12, @09:16PM EDT (#17)
I've been working in this industry for 15 years, and I can tell you that this kind of thing comes around every five years with a new name. The underlying ideas don't change much; the marketing does.

This is why Portals sucks. I've been saying it for years. Install Linix. Problem solved.
