Ask Dashdot: Why Do People Post 'First Post'?
Humor Posted by Hemlock on Monday October 11, @10:00AM EDT
from the a-sociological-inquiry dept.
Anthropologeek writes "I'm writing a paper on online communities and I keep seeing comments that consist entirely of the words 'first post.' They are usually not first, and they are always moderated into oblivion. What drives this behavior? Is it an art form? A cry for help? Please explain." We expect this to be the most self-referential thread in Dashdot history.

So what you're saying is that it's a conspiracy. Got it.

    It's a race
by Anonymous Coward on Monday October 11, @10:07AM EDT (#2)
It's a race with no prize. That's what makes it pure.

I think you're missing the point. Nobody is arguing it's perfect, just that it's better than what we had.

Exactly. And the vendors know it, which is why they're scared.

I work in this field, and the parent is basically right, although the details are a bit more complicated than one comment can cover.

Did you even read the parent post? He said the opposite.

I tried that and it set my monitor on fire. Thanks a lot.

The parent's point stands, though: it depends entirely on the use case.

    Hall of Fame

There should be a hall of fame for the rare person who actually gets first post AND is moderated up because it's also insightful. I've seen it happen twice.

    Read the article

Did anyone actually read the article? Half the comments here are answering questions that are answered in the second paragraph.

My microwave has more processing power than the computer that went to the moon, and it still can't figure out popcorn.

Not true at all. I've been running it for months with no problems. Maybe check your hardware?

    Offtopic, but
by Anonymous Coward on Monday October 11, @12:20PM EDT (#15)
Offtopic, but does anyone know how to get a Sound Blaster 16 working under the new kernel? It just beeps at me. Rhythmically.

I'm not so sure this is good news. Every time someone says 'this will change everything', it changes about 3% of something.

No, that's not how any of this works. Please read the FAQ before posting.
