Poll Results: vi Narrowly Beats Emacs, ed Gets 3%

Last week's poll asking for your one true editor came in at 31,442 votes. vi took 41%, emacs 39%, pico 9%, and ed a surprisingly loyal 3%. "Cat with a redirect" got 2%, and 6% voted for a word processor whose name we will not print here for fear of starting a riot. Comments are open, but please keep the flames below 451 degrees.

Emacs is a fine operating system. It just lacks a decent text editor.

Exactly. And the vendors know it, which is why they're scared.

Actually, that's a common misconception. The spec explicitly allows it; it's the vendors who didn't implement it.
