ParanoidPolly writes "A European parliamentary report has described Project Earwig, an alleged international network of listening stations that sifts phone calls, faxes and e-mail for keywords. A group of netizens has declared October 21 'Jam Earwig Day' and is asking everyone to put suspicious-sounding words in their e-mail signatures." Hello to all our readers in the listening stations. Please moderate this story up.

    Jam day won't work
by Anonymous Coward on Wednesday October 13, @09:28PM EDT (#2)
Adding keywords to your sig just trains their filters on noise. Real traffic analysis doesn't care about words anyway, it cares about who talks to whom.

I think you're missing the point. Nobody is arguing it's perfect, just that it's better than what we had.

    Use encryption
by Anonymous Coward on Wednesday October 13, @09:59PM EDT (#5)
Use PGP. Use it for everything, including mail to your mom about dinner. If everything is encrypted, encrypted mail stops being suspicious.

    BSD: a eulogy
by GrumpyGreybeard on Wednesday October 13, @11:53PM EDT (#16)
    (User Info)
Sad news, everyone. Analysts at a firm I just made up report that BSD now runs on fewer than 4% of servers, down from 4.1% last spring. Even the daemon mascot has been seen updating his resume. Gather round, friends, and light a candle for the little OS that could, but statistically shouldn't.

For anyone who wants to read more, the original announcement is on their site and there's a good technical write-up in the newsgroups. Search for it, the link is too long to paste.
