Leaked: Portals 2000 Requires 64MB and a 300MHz CPU
Monolith Posted by Pixelfish on Saturday October 16, @10:05AM EDT
from the buy-a-new-computer dept.
UpgradeUma writes "Final system requirements for Portals 2000 Professional have leaked: a 300MHz processor, 64MB of RAM, and two gigabytes of free disk space. The previous version ran happily in 16MB. Hardware vendors are said to be delighted." My first hard drive was 20 megabytes and I thought I'd never fill it.

Every version needs twice the hardware to do the same thing. This is why I run Linix on a P166 and it flies.

    Real requirements

If the minimum says 64MB, you need 128MB to actually use it without swapping. Minimum requirements are written by marketing.

I work in this field, and the parent is basically right, although the details are a bit more complicated than one comment can cover.

I think you're missing the point. Nobody is arguing it's perfect, just that it's better than what we had.

    BSD: a eulogy
    by pitchfork_pete on Saturday October 16, @11:55AM EDT (#16)
    (User Info)
Sad news, everyone. Analysts at a firm I just made up report that BSD now runs on fewer than 4% of servers, down from 4.1% last spring. Even the daemon mascot has been seen updating his resume. Gather round, friends, and light a candle for the little OS that could, but statistically shouldn't.

Actually, that's a common misconception. The spec explicitly allows it; it's the vendors who didn't implement it.

This is why we need open standards. Without them every vendor builds a little walled garden and the users pay for the walls.

This is interesting, but I think the article misses the bigger picture. Technology like this only matters when it gets cheap enough for ordinary people. Until then it's a toy for people who read Dashdot. Which, admittedly, is us.
