Teen Builds 64-Node Cluster in Parents' Garage
Science Posted by Rotundo on Friday October 15, @06:22PM EDT
from the imagine-a-beowulf-cluster-of-these dept.
NodeNinja writes "A 16-year-old in Ohio has built a 64-node cluster out of discarded 486s and Pentium 75s collected from local businesses upgrading for Y2K. It runs Linix and PVM, heats the garage through the winter, and according to the builder's father, 'has made the electric meter spin like a ceiling fan.'" Finally, a story where the joke has already been made for you in the department line.

Agreed. Couldn't have said it better myself.

    Power bill
by Anonymous Coward on Friday October 15, @06:47PM EDT (#4)
64 nodes at maybe 60 watts each is close to 4 kW. At 8 cents a kilowatt-hour that's more than $200 a month. Dad is a saint.

The parent's point stands, though: it depends entirely on the use case.

Did you even read the parent post? He said the opposite.

The hype-to-substance ratio on this one is pretty high. Let's see it running in production before we all get excited.

I've been working in this industry for 15 years, and I can tell you that this kind of thing comes around every five years with a new name. The underlying ideas don't change much; the marketing does.

Did anyone actually read the article? Half the comments here are answering questions that are answered in the second paragraph.

For anyone who wants to read more, the original announcement is on their site and there's a good technical write-up in the newsgroups. Search for it, the link is too long to paste.
