HALCYON SPRINGS, Florida (CNM) -- The Robo-Rover, a silver robotic dog made by the electronics firm Kitamura, went on sale on the Internet Wednesday morning. All 5,000 units were sold in 20 minutes, the company said.

The dog can walk, sit, wag its tail and recognize a pink ball. It does not shed, bark at the mail carrier or need to be walked, though owners can take it for a walk "for its morale," according to the manual.
"It is the perfect pet for the year 2000," said Halcyon Springs resident Tom Larkspur, who got through on his fourth try. "It doesn't eat, and it doesn't care that I work 80 hours a week."
Kitamura says it will make more next year. Meanwhile, the dogs are reselling on online auction sites for up to $6,000. "The resale market is very strong," said one dealer. "Stronger than the dog, actually."
